Membership provides the following benefits:
Journal: Every member receives the Institute’s highly-respected professional journal, United Service, which is published quarterly – in March, June, September and December. United Service publishes the proceedings of the Institute’s lectures and seminars series, defence and security news, research papers, informed opinion, letters, obituaries, book reviews, and Institute news and notes. Articles are peer-reviewed before acceptance.
Library: The Institute maintains the Ursula Davidson Library, which is located with the Institute’s offices on Level 20, Defence Plaza, 270 Pitt Street, Sydney. The library contains some 30,000 volumes on military history, national security and defence matters, dating from the early 19 century to the present day and the collection is added to regularly. The library is a public library and is open for reading, study and research between 12 noon and 4.00 p.m., Monday to Friday (public holidays excepted). Members (but not non-members) may borrow recent and contemporary books for up to one month at a time. Older works, however, may only be used in the library.
Monthly Luncheon-Lectures: We arrange a regular programme of lectures on defence and security matters. The programme covers both current and historic issues. The lectures are normally held at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, Level 1, 280 Pitt Street at 1.00 p.m., on the last Tuesday of each month, December excepted. There is no charge for attending. The lectures, unless otherwise advertised, are for members and their guests only, as sensitive matters are discussed from time to time. Attendees are expected to keep such matters confidential and not discuss them publicly. The lectures are preceded by a social hour beginning at 12 noon during which tea and coffee are served and a light sandwich lunch may be purchased for
$8.00, provided that it has been ordered from the office (Telephone: 9393 2325) by noon on the day preceding the lecture.
Seminars: Seminars, usually of half-day or full-day duration, are conducted from time to time to augment the lecture programme. Seminars enable issues to be examined in depth and allow more audience participation than the regular lectures do.
Visits: We arrange a regular programme of visits to defence and security establishments in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory each year. These help keep members abreast of current operational, training and equipment issues. The visits range in duration from one to three days and are conducted at cost to members participating.
Social Activities: Occasional social activities facilitate professional networking and provide a common and inexpensive meeting opportunity for members and their friends. The highlight event is the annual formal dinner which marks anniversary of the foundation of the Institute on 20 August 1888 and is held on the Friday evening closest to that date.
Informal luncheons are held from time to time, usually at Defence establishments and often linked to a formal visit to the establishment.
